Venture Partner
Mark Barry is a Venture Partner at OpenView. A 25-year IT veteran, Mark brings extensive operating and business development experience to his work with venture capital backed businesses. Prior to OpenView, Mark spent 15 years at Microsoft in various executive positions in enterprise sales, channel development, consulting and support services. While at Microsoft, he was responsible for building and leading high performance teams and achieved several top revenue growth and other awards for his achievements.
Most recently, Mark was Founder and Managing Director of Microsoft's Emerging Business Unit where he was responsible for managing worldwide strategic relationships with venture capitalists and emerging venture capital backed businesses. Mark led the effort to institutionalize Microsoft's worldwide sourcing and value-add programs for venture capital backed businesses, as well as Microsoft's M&A and IP strategies with product/vertical industry groups and corporate development.
Mark's career at Microsoft included several major roles, including
  • Director of Microsoft's Enterprise Customer Unit and Managing Director of Microsoft Consulting Services, where he led field/inside sales and consulting professionals to achieve double digit revenue growth for Microsoft North America. Awarded top honors three consecutive years and closed one of the largest commercial license agreements valued at $120 million over five years.
  • Director of Microsoft's Organizational Customer Unit responsible for building channel sales (VARs, VAPs , ISVs and OEMs) resulting in 39% revenue growth year over year. Awarded top district two consecutive years and piloted structured sales model, which was later adopted worldwide.
  • Member of Microsoft's Developer and Platform Evangelist Unit, where he was responsible for securing early .NET acceptance among venture capital backed businesses in order to create a vibrant worldwide eco-system around the .NET platform.
  • Served as U.S. Director of Microsoft's Desktop Applications Support unit, where his responsibilities included managing a staff of 1,000, P&L ownership, project staffing and outsourcing, release management (Microsoft Office 2000), vendor negotiations, and site management. Mark achieved high satisfaction ratings for the group, and substantial cost savings for the company.
Prior to Microsoft, Mark held senior management positions in enterprise sales and marketing at Wang Laboratories and was the co-founder of a startup, CAS, Inc., focused on small business applications.
Mark graduated from West Virginia University with a BS in Business Administration and has studied Graduate Business Management at Southern Methodist University. He is active on several advisory boards and is a former President of the Southeastern Software Association. Mark Barry is also a Certified ScrumMaster.
